01
Why 2026 is the Best Year to Go Solar
The UK solar market has shifted dramatically in the past 24 months. The combination of geopolitical instability driving oil and gas prices higher, government mandates for solar on all new builds, and falling installation costs has created a perfect storm for solar adoption.
Octopus Energy reported a 50% surge in solar panel sales following the Iran war energy price spike. With the energy price cap set to reset in July 2026 and expected to rise further, homeowners who install solar before July will begin seeing savings immediately when bills increase.
Installation costs have fallen by around 40% since 2020. Solar systems now benefit from zero VAT, making them more accessible than at any point in history. Meanwhile, the payback period — the time it takes for savings to cover installation costs — has shortened to as little as 6 years for well-placed London properties.
02
How Much Do Solar Panels Cost in the UK?
The cost of a solar panel system depends primarily on the size of the system, measured in kilowatts peak (kWp). For most UK homes, a 4–6kWp system is appropriate.
Typical installed costs in London (including zero VAT):
• 3kWp system (10–12 panels): £5,000–£7,000
• 4kWp system (12–14 panels): £6,000–£9,000
• 6kWp system (18–20 panels): £9,000–£12,000
• Battery storage add-on: £3,000–£6,000
Prices vary by installer, access difficulty, roof type, and the specific panels chosen. Always get at least 3 quotes from MCS certified installers before committing. Use our free quote service to compare.
03
The £7,500 Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) Grant
The Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides government grants to help homeowners replace fossil fuel heating systems with low-carbon alternatives.
Current grant levels:
• Air source heat pump: £7,500
• Ground source heat pump: £7,500
To be eligible, your home must:
• Have a valid Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) lodged in the last 10 years
• Not have outstanding loft or cavity wall insulation recommendations on your EPC
• Currently use oil, gas or electric heating
The grant is paid directly to your MCS certified installer, reducing the upfront cost. Your installer will handle the application on your behalf. If you are considering solar and a heat pump, combining both qualifies you for the grant on the heat pump portion.
04
How Much Can You Save on Energy Bills?
Savings depend on your current energy usage, system size, and how much of the solar generation you use directly versus export back to the grid.
Typical annual savings:
• 3kWp system: £600–£900 per year
• 4kWp system: £900–£1,200 per year
• 6kWp system: £1,200–£1,800 per year
• With battery storage, savings increase by 20–40%
Households with higher daytime energy usage — those working from home, with EVs, or with heat pumps — see the best returns because they use more of what they generate.
With energy bills rising towards £2,500–£3,000 per year for average households, a 4kWp system can cut bills by 40–50%. Add battery storage and that rises to 65–75%.
05
What is MCS Certification and Why It Matters
MCS (Microgeneration Certification Scheme) is the industry standard accreditation for renewable energy installers in the UK. It is not optional — it is essential.
Why MCS certification matters:
• Only MCS certified installers can process BUS grant applications
• The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG) — which pays you for exported electricity — requires MCS certified installation
• Your system must be MCS certified to qualify for most manufacturer warranties
• Building regulations require MCS certification for grid-connected systems
Before hiring any installer, ask for their MCS installer number and verify it at the official MCS register at mcscertified.com. Never use an uncertified installer regardless of cost savings offered.
06
Battery Storage — Is It Worth It?
Battery storage allows you to store electricity generated during the day for use in the evening and overnight. With approximately one in twenty UK homes currently using battery storage, it remains a minority choice — but the economics are improving rapidly.
Current battery storage costs: £3,000–£6,000 for a typical domestic system (6–10kWh capacity)
Battery storage makes the most sense when:
• You pay high import rates overnight (E.g. on time-of-use tariffs)
• You have an EV that charges overnight
• You want energy independence and resilience
• You are considering a heat pump alongside solar
Standalone battery payback periods are currently 10–15 years, which is longer than solar alone. However, combined solar and battery systems often achieve better overall economics and the technology cost continues to fall. If you are future-proofing, battery readiness (even without the battery initially) is worth specifying.
07
The Smart Export Guarantee (SEG)
The Smart Export Guarantee requires licensed electricity suppliers with more than 150,000 customers to offer a tariff to small-scale renewable generators — including domestic solar installations.
What this means for you: any electricity you generate but do not use is exported to the grid, and you are paid for every unit exported.
Current SEG rates vary by supplier: typically 4p–15p per kWh. While lower than import rates (currently around 28p/kWh), it means excess generation is never wasted.
Your solar installer will help you register for SEG after installation. You will need a smart meter to participate in most SEG tariffs.
